NEW AGE MEDIA
Introduction
Are you aware of how you can interact in today's media? If not do not worry just stick to the end to understand how to use the new models of digital media available.
This blog will focus on trends that influence the usage of new media models which have now become digital and are your social media platforms.
The recent media trends have included AI generated media which is harmful to viewers as this makes it hard to differentiate between real and generated content so this shift of the way digital media is produced I will outline the important trends and how to utilise them.
The Rise of AI Slop
Businesses, influencers and participators in social media platforms have recently been using AI-generated content which has resulted in what is called AI slop.
This type of content has been on the rise in 2025 with platforms like Claude, Midjourney and Google Veo being the main ones used which provides low quality engaging content that often is offensive or lack human detail to it.
The AI slop has even been used for audacious deepfakes of high profile individuals like the dancing Cyril Ramaphosa meme that was circulating late last year made by several Tik-Tok accounts and into other social networks like instagram, this issues poses a threat of possible misinformation being spread as some viewers may think it is real.

The Need For More Authentic Storytelling
The rise of AI curated content often viewed as low-quality slop has led people to drawback to authentic media curation which does not involve full AI
involvement.
Deepfakes have led to misinformation among media platforms so this stance aims to foster greater creator communities as many people have been seen to view their news on social media platforms such as Tik-Tok and Facebook which makes creators to play a crucial role in this new trend.
This digital media trend aligns with the trend of AI paradox which entails that brands and media producers now use AI as a tool for efficiency not of creation, which makes their work flow to be optimised while maintaining human authenticity.

The Culture Aspect
The new models of
digital media has forever made the aspect of media culture to be important evidence of this is seen through the re-creation of vintage media formats into the digital space such as newspaper style article and social media posts.
Media like any other thing will always have a valuable history and this means that previous formats will not be forgotten but will be reiterated in the new models which are primarily digitally focused.
How To Utilise The New Media Trends
These media trends provide us with a lot of opportunities of creativity that can be introduced in the media scene. AI-generation can be a blueprint to a quicker access to content for users and creators will be efficient in communicating with audiences.
Authentic storytelling can make content to feel real again and have a voice of its own when viewed or read.
Sticking to the culture aspect creators can be able to make content that is relate-able.
Interaction and Communication in New Age Media
Communication has changed fast in the last five years bringing uncertainty to many media personnel. These changes have impacted traditional media in a negative way as it is now prompted to adapt or be left behind.
Interaction is now more digitally meaning stories have to be easy to access in digital platforms. This type of interaction makes communication in the media to be multilateral based. Communications will almost be the same even in the future as viewers have shown that human authenticity and original messages will always be better than AI generated messages.
Conclusion
As a PR student at the University of Johannesburg the different media trends outlined in this blog have had a huge impact on how I access and use the digital platforms these trends have been relevant since last year, which was seen as the year of the personal brand which made media to want content that is more authentic rather that repetitions of previous one. I believe that with all I have written in this blog will give an idea of how media has changed throughout the years and how we can expect to communicate in the media space in the years to come.
